The news article highlighted the concerns over increasing tree mortality in Southern Finland related to more frequent droughts and intensifying bark beetle outbreaks.

Karjalainen wrote about our findings on diurnal tree branch movement. We showed in a controlled setting that branch position was strongly linked to tree water status. Decreasing water content induced by drought resulted in an upward branch movement.
